Supermileage is a competition where students design, manufacture and race a single person vehicle designed to get the best fuel economy possible. The vehicle must meet various technical and safety rules while demonstrating its braking, stability and roll bar strength.
The Engineering Design and Development class started construction of their first supermileage car during the 1999-2000 school year. Needless to say it was a huge learning curve! The vehicle, nicknamed "The Tank", spent more time broken down in the pits than on the racetrack. The team rebounded the following year by building an entirely new vehicle and placing fourth in competition. Over the years, the students challenged themselves to try new ideas and concepts. Sometimes the ideas work, sometimes they don't.
