The Hybrid Hornet was designed and constructed for the 2002-03 competition year. This vehicle used a 5 HP Briggs & Stratton engine and a 24 volt alternator as it’s power conversion source. The electrical power was then sent to the Briggs & Stratton ETEK electric motor as the power source. We installed gauges to verify amperage output of the alternator and amperage use of the electric motor. We also installed a three speed planetary transmission in the rear hub.
The chassis was all aluminum, along with the body panels. The canopy was bent polycarbonate with air assist lift struts. The body was painted black with flip color flames. Yes, those are solar panels in both the front and rear wings. We used the solar power to keep the starter battery for the 5 HP engine charged.
We also installed underglow neon lights underneath the body.
